We believe in showing up for our residents in a way that eases suffering and creates space for healing. We operate on a small intentionally limited scale, taking into account our residents' unique history and particular needs for lifelong care. Every resident receives detailed attention, adaptability in their schedule and a holistic approach to support their wellbeing. Through this work, we aim to create a space that supports healing for our residents and for the people who connect with them, while fostering a more thoughtful, compassionate approach to horsemanship and animal care.
Our guiding pillars
A permanent home where each resident is cared for with consistency and attention to their individual needs.
An intentional, consent-based approach that prioritizes the horse’s wellbeing, communication, and long-term soundness over expectation.
An opportunity to connect with and educate the community on what responsible, ethical animal care truly looks like.
A quiet, grounded space where both horses and people can find rest, rebuild trust, and experience meaningful connection.
We’re lucky to have nearly 25 residents who now call Buddha Barn home for the rest of their lives. A question we hear often is, “How did they end up here?”
The answer is different for every horse, but many stories begin the same way. Horses are long-term commitments, and over time, their needs often change. With age can come increased medical care, specialized nutrition, injuries, or ongoing conditions that require more time, knowledge, and financial support than many are prepared for.
Many residents were lovingly owned, but ultimately surrendered due to the rising cost and complexity of their care. Others came from the auction cycle, unsafe environments, or situations where their future was uncertain. Some have been with our Founder since her days as an equestrian and are now living lives centered around therapeutic connection rather than expectation.
These stories are not uncommon, and they reflect a larger gap between ownership and lifelong care.
At Buddha Barn, we exist to help bridge that gap. To ensure that when a horse’s needs change, their care doesn’t fall short, and their life continues with the dignity and support they deserve.
